Game Changers: Vital New Music

Too often, African-American compositions and players are underrepresented in classical music. The APO’s first concert of 2023 breaks new musical boundaries with the performance of Movements for Flute and Orchestra. Featuring flutist, Brian Dunbar and composer Carlos Simon.

"MOVEMENTS" by Carlos Simon with the North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra

The NMSO welcomes flutist Brian Dunbar as he performs the new work Movements for Flute and Orchestra written for him by composer Carlos Simon, the Sphinx Medal of Excellence recipient in 2021, and the current Composer-in-Residence for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This concerto is significant in expanding the repertoire for solo flute and orchestra, and also because it is a work commissioned by a Black flutist and written by a Black composer. The concerto explores the movements of life through four separate sections. The orchestra performs Joseph Schwantner’s emotional and moving New Morning for the World: “Daybreak of Freedom” featuring excerpts from the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Beethoven’s Fifth & American Icons

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony begins with the most famous notes in history. The symphony moves from despair to joy as if tracing a “hero’s journey.” In America, the journey of Black artists has shaped our national sound. American music grew from the spirituals, blues, R&B, and the dance tunes George Gershwin heard in Harlem.

Copy of Tulane University Opera presents Humperdink's Hansel & Gretel

Uptown Campus

Dixon Performing Arts Annex

Recital Hall, Room 152

At a woodcutter's house on the edge of the forest, Hansel and Gretel play while their parents are out. Their mother returns and accidentally knocks over the milk jug that contains the last sustenance in the house. Furious, she sends both children out into the forest to look for strawberries. Their father comes home to find them missing, and warns his wife about the dangers of the witch in the forest. They set out in search of them. Meanwhile Hansel and Gretel have become lost, and go to sleep guarded by angels. In the morning they wake up to discover a house made of gingerbread in the vicinity. They soon come across the owner – the witch – who proceeds to turn Gretel into a servant and starts fattening Hansel for the oven. Just before she can place him there, the children turn the tables and shove her in instead. They free the other child-victims (who have become gingerbread-children) in time for their parents to arrive and lead them in a hymn of thanksgiving.

Tickets are Required
Tickets will go on sale in Spring 2019.
